You can follow this tutorial if you’re about to replace parking brake shows in a Volvo S60 (2000 to 2010), S80 (1998 to 2006), V70 (2000 to 2007), XC70 (2000 to 2007) or XC90 (2003 to 2014).
Symptoms of parking brake shows needing replacing a loose parking brake or wired squeaky sound coming for the rear when braking.
Required new parts
– 31262869 for S60, V70, XC70 and S80
– 31262874 for XC90 (pictured)
Required tools
– Flat screw driver
– Allen 7mm socket
– 10mm Socket
– 13mm Socket
– Caliper wind tool (optional)
Step 1.
Removing the rear wheel
Jack the wheel you’re working on and make sure that the car is securely supported with some jack stands. Remove the wheel.
Step 2.
Remove the brake caliper and holder
Remove the pads retaining spring, insrting a screwdriver between the spring and the caliper and prying it back.
Remove the caps for both of the caliper screws (in the back of the calipers), and remove the screws (7mm allen key)
Remove the brake caliper and hang it from the spring using a wire (you may need to pry a little with a scredriver between the pad and the disc to make the piston retract making room for the removal of the caliper).
Remove the two screws for the brake caliper carrier / holder (13mm bolt) and remove it. Screws are from the back holding the carrier to the wheel hub (not easy to take pics)
Step 3.
Remove the brake disc
Remove the 10mm bolt holding the brake disc in place.
Step 4.
Remove the two top and bottom fixing springs for the brake shoes (marked with A in the image below).
To remove the fixing springs (A), with a screw driver, compress the spring and move it backward, and let up so that the spring’s end fits the slot in the bracket and can be removed:
Detach the return springs at the expander (marked with B in the image above).
Bend the brake shoes (marked C) apart and remove them with the return springs and spacer (marked D)
Clean the surfaces of the brake drum where the brake shoes make contact.
Step 5.
First install the new brake shoes in place.
Next install the spacer (marked D above) and the smaller return spring on the brake shoes.
Then, with the help of a screw driver install the fixing springs (marked E below) for the brake shoes and after them the return bigger spring (marked F below) at the expander.
Install the brake disc and the 10mm bolt holding it in place. Tighten the bolt to 8 Nm.
Install the caliper holder mounting screws. Tighten to 60 Nm.
Install the brake pads on the brake caliper and then install the caliper into the holder.
Install the brake pads retaining spring. Put the wheel back on the car and tighten the wheel nuts.
Step 7.
Check the handbrake adjustment. In order to do it go into the car and pull the handbrake level. You’ll need to pull the handbrake and then go back to the wheel and check if it’s locked. Full braking effect should be achieved between the second and the fifth notch.
If that is not the case, put the handbrake lever in its lowest position. Go back to the wheel, remove one of the nuts and turn the wheel until you can see the adjuster in the nut hole.
In the image below, with the disc brake removed, you can see the adjuster screw marked with G. With the wheel in place you’ll have to adjust it via the hole surrounded by the orange circle.
Using a screwdriver rotate the adjuster until the braking effect is perfect.
Check that the wheels rotate freely with the handbrake level in the down position after adjustment.
Put the wheels back in place, the car back in the ground and re-tighten the wheel nuts. Take the car for a drive and check if the adjustment is perfect.
