Here is a guide on how to remove, replace or repair the interior roof headlining on a 1995 to 2004 Volvo S40 or V40.

If your car is equiped with a sunroof, open it completely.
Make a note of the anti-theft radio code
Disconnect the battery negative terminal.
Removing the A-pillar panel (Pull the panel away from the window frame. Remove the panel in an upward direction.)
If the car is equipped with a mirror with lighting, the cable for the connector must be disconnected at the A-post.
Removing the front interior lighting
Carefully remove the right and left hand side lenses
Remove the two screws
Remove the interior lighting from the roof
Remove the connector using a twisting movement.
Removing the ultrasonic sensor (alarm)
Press the sensors out of the holders
Remove the holder from the headlining. First press in the lock groove.
Removing the sun visor and holder
Remove the screw
Remove the sun visor
Note! If the car is equipped with a mirror with lighting, the connector must be disconnected at the A post.
Remove the screw from the catches
Press the sides of the catches. Remove the bracket using a twisting movement.
Removing the grab handle
Driver’s side:
Remove the covers over the mounting holes.
Passenger sides:
Open the covers
Remove the screws
Pull the handles straight out.
Removing the rear reading lamps or lenses
Carefully remove the weatherstrip at the upper edge of the door frame
Pull the headlining downwards
Press in the catches (A)
Remove the lighting from the headlining
Disconnect the connector.
Removing the B-post panels
Warning! Do not damage the SRS wiring behind the panel.
Pull out the panel at the top
Lift the panel straight up.
Removing the rear interior lighting (V40)
Pull the lighting out from the headlining
Disconnect the connector.
Remove the C-pillar
Remove the D-pillar
Removing the headlining
Note! There may be adhesive from the front windscreen in the edge of the headlining. Carefully cut along the edge through the adhesive.
Note! The headlining is now secure at the front and rear. Ensure that the headlining does not bend or rumple when removing.
Note! If the car is equipped with a sliding sunroof, the mouldings around the roof opening and the connector must be removed.
V40: Remove the centre plug at the rear. (turn 90°).
Remove the six screws and the plugs
Lift the headlining over the seals.
V40: Pull the headlining out through the tailgate.
S40: Fold down both the front seats to the reclining position. Lift the headlining over the tabs on the B-post.
Remove the mounting pins from the A and C-posts
Remove the headlining through the door on the passenger side (S40), or through the rear tailgat (V40).
